Sri Lanka: victory of outgoing Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in the legislative elections

Tams tams and applause fed to the proclamation of the results of the legislative elections in Sri Lanka. The United National Party, in power since January, won the legislative ballot with 106 seats, only seven seats away from the absolute majority.

Outgoing Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is therefore almost guaranteed to stay in his post. He should be able to count on the support of movements loyal to the current President Maithripala Sirisena.

For the former strongman of the country Mahinda Rajapakse, the failure is scathing . He admitted defeat even before the official announcement of the results. With this election, the former president hoped to return to the forefront of the political scene as Prime Minister.

Rajapaksa, the ex-strongman of Sri Lanka, misses his return to the political scene

Monday’s elections are among the most peaceful in Sri Lanka, plagued by more than three decades of civil war.
