Sri Lanka: the A9, highway of reconciliation

For over a decade, Kilinochchi served as the capital for the Liberation Tigers movement from Tamil Islam. But in November 2008, the Sri Lankan army launched attacks on the city from three different locations. The fighting raged in particular on the A9 motorway, the main axis connecting Colombo with the Tamil areas in the north of the island.

Many people died and much of the city was devastated before the army regained control in January 2009.

Since then, the time has come for reconstruction, schools have resurfaced, water and electricity supplies have been restored, making the A9 a symbol of reconciliation.

However, the daily life of the inhabitants remains harsh, even if the bloody page of the civil war has been definitively turned.
