Netflix deletes inactive accounts – saving hundreds of thousands of customer’s money

Anyone who no longer actively uses Netflix but keeps forgetting to delete their account will now be helped by the streaming service itself. According to an announcement, inactive accounts are to be deleted unless specifically contradicted.

In a post on the official Netflix blog, Eddy Wu, product manager at the streaming giant, announced an innovation that will be of particular interest to inactive users.

Confirmation of Netflix membership required

Anyone who no longer actively uses the streaming service, but for whatever reason, has not yet canceled their account and continues to pay the fees, will now be helped.

In the future, all users who have either been inactive for a year since the start of their membership or who have not used the service for a total of two years will be sent emails or notifications will be displayed in the app. These must be confirmed manually that the membership would like to be kept.

Netflix account can be reactivated within 10 months

If the messages are ignored, the account is automatically deactivated by Netflix so that the user no longer has to pay the contributions. Should he change his mind within the next ten months, the account can be reactivated without any problems. In this way, favorites, profiles and account details are also retained.

“We always thought it should be easy to walk in and out of. We hope this new approach will help people save some of their hard-earned money,” said Wu. Netflix, on the other hand, loses revenue. According to the company, around 0.5 percent of subscriptions are affected – with around 183 million subscribers worldwide, that’s a few hundred thousand.
