By summer it will cut 1.3 million tons of Co2, here are the first results of its ‘carbon negative’ strategy
New investments in technologies for the removal and capture of carbon nio, including the funding of 26 projects for the removal of more than 1.3 million tons of carbonic dioxide in the atmosphere by this summer. It is one of the steps outlined by Microsoft in its Sustainability Report and among the first results of the IT giant’s plan to reduce the environmental impact. Not only. Microsoft also announced an additional $ 1 billion investment in its Climate Innovation Fund, the fund for innovation and new technologies to combat climate change. One year after the presentation of its strategy to become carbon negative by 2030- through the implementation of a plan to reduce the environmental impact of the company, its customers and partners – the company presented updates in the sustainability field with the first results and new investments, to support global climate policies and accelerate innovation. Among the first results achieved by Microsoft and indicated in the new Sustainability Report there is also a reduction of its emissions equal to 6%, the launch of 20 works for the reconstitution of water reserves and a project with NGOs to guarantee access to drinking water for 1.5 million people worldwide, accompanied by a reduction in solid waste from Microsoft data centers and campuses destined for landfills and incinerators equal to 60,000 tons.
Through the Planetary Computer, a platform that leverages the Azure cloud and Artificial Intelligence, 10 petabytes of environmental data were collected by Microsoft “useful for supporting organizations, companies, startups and governments in the development and implementation of concrete projects in able to promote environmental protection “. In addition, to promote even greater environmental responsibility, Microsoft announced that “progress towards sustainability goals will be considered among the factors that will determine executive compensation, starting next summer”.
Finally, Microsoft also announced together with Mojang Studios the arrival of the City of Sustainability on Minecraft. It is a free downloadable map from Minecraft Marketplace “Education Collection” and within Minecraft is the Education Edition that invites players to explore how Microsoft’s sustainability goals come to life within the game and that allows teachers six new lessons designed to address environmental issues with students.
