NEW WARNINGS IN THE SOCIAL NETWORK – How Twitter tries to curb exploratory language

If the emotions boil up during an argument in the social networks, sooner or later insults will also fall. With a new function, Twitter wants to prevent this and make users think.

Stuttgart – Twitter tries to move its users to a more polite tone on the platform with a new function. To this end, the company introduces warning notices that recognize swear words and draw the sender’s attention to them. If the system detects insults or strong expressions in a tweet, it prompts the user to double-check before sending it. The user can then either change, discard or post his tweet anyway.

According to Twitter, the new feature resulted in less offensive messages during a test run. 34 percent of the users who received this notice changed their original tweet or did not send it at all. Once the message was shown to users, in the future they wrote an average of 11 percent fewer offensive responses.

According to its own information, Twitter also takes into account the relationship between users. For example, if a person replies to a tweet from a user who also follows him back, no warning is displayed. According to Twitter, in this case the likelihood is higher that the two will agree on the preferred tone of communication.

So far, the new notes are only displayed in English accounts, but other languages are to follow in the future.

New tip function

Another new function of Twitter is to enable selected accounts to have a tip function with immediate effect. Followers can donate a tip of their own choosing to these users using a new button. According to its own statements, Twitter does not have a share in this. The new function should be available to all users in the course of the year.

In the future, there should be even more opportunities for users to earn money with Twitter. Twitter is planning so-called super followers who receive exclusive content from the ambitious Twitter users they follow for a monthly fee.
