Legislative under high security in Sri Lanka

The electoral campaign was peppered with violence. At the end of July, the attack on a meeting of the National Union Party, a member of the government coalition, left two dead and 12 injured. 63,000 police officers were therefore mobilized on Monday for these legislative elections which oppose two major political figures of the country.

On the one hand, the former head of state Mahinda Rajapakse, who had nevertheless spent nearly ten years in power.

On the other, Ranil Wickremesinghe, the head of government who spoke in favor of early elections in order to strengthen his majority in Parliament and facilitate the implementation of reforms.

The results will be known tomorrow.
